LOVE: 6 elements of EQ to help you get promoted
INNOVATE: Why you should be conducting stay interviews
INTEREST: The new workplace trend - 'quiet hiring'
WHAT WE LOVE:
IQ very often gets you the job, but EQ (Emotional Intelligence) gets you promoted.
Emotional Intelligence is a collection of elements comprising our emotional and social functioning and general psychological well-being.
All of these elements can be improved if we are intentional about working on them.
Here are the 6 elements of Emotional Intelligence that most correlate with work success and one action you can do to work on each:
1. Empathy - putting yourself in someone else's shoes
Go beyond listening to words and pay attention to non-verbal communication and what emotional cues are being expressed.
2. Self-Actualization - your pursuit of meaning and/or goals
Develop and talk about a goal.
3. Interpersonal Relationships - creating relationships based on trust and compassion
Smile and maintain eye contact, use open body language and remove physical barriers.
4. Assertiveness - effectively holding to your beliefs and feelings
Make a strong statement about an opinion or point of view - making sure that everyone can hear you.
5. Stress Tolerance - your ability to cope with stressful situations
When you start to feel nervous or anxious, stand up, stretch, and move around.
6. Impulse Control - taking in new information and pausing before reacting
Resist the urge to be one of the first voices to jump in to share, engage, or offer direction.
WHERE WE SEE INNOVATION:
How to conduct stay interviews
Most of us have heard of exit interviews (interviews that take place right before an individual is leaving an organization), but a better idea might be stay interviews.
Stay interviews are conversations that are set up while an individual is still at the organization to help you understand what motivates them, what will keep them, and what might make them leave.
This article recommends asking these 5 questions during stay interviews:
What do you look forward to each day when you come to work?
What are you learning here, and what do you want to learn?
Why do you stay here?
When is the last time you thought about leaving us, and what prompted it?
What can I do to make your job better for you?
If you conduct stay interviews in your organization, I'd love to hear how it's going!
WHAT INTERESTS US:
'Quiet Hiring' is the new workplace trend
First, it was quiet quitting, then came quiet firing, and now here comes quiet hiring. The newest workplace trend that is taking over news headlines.
Recently shared by Gartner as one of the 9 workplace trends for 2023, this concept seems to be gaining popularity.
Here's the best description of quiet hiring that I found, "quiet hiring is when an organization acquires new skills without actually hiring new full-time employees. While it can refer to bringing on short-term contractors, it usually means giving current employees more responsibilities beyond their current job description. Some examples include moving to other positions or taking on different projects internally."
It will be interesting to follow this trend across 2023 as budgets seem to be a bit tighter and organizations look for nuanced ways to accomplish objectives/goals.
